Clean Water in India

Did you know:

1 out of 6 people worldwide are without access to clean drinking water.
50% of hospital beds on earth are occupied by people with easily preventable water borne diseases.
In the past 10 years, diarrhea has killed more children than all the people lost to armed conflicts since World War II.

Alarming statistics! Unconscionable!! Which is exactly why we joined hands with the Planet Water Foundation (PWF) and long time business partner, the Farida Group, to address this very issue in a community where water borne disease was found to be highest in our survey among all the communities in India from where we source. With a financial grant from Timberland, Planet Water Foundation and the Farida Group installed a drinking water tower at the Quaide Millath School on 10th March, 2011 to provide safe drinking water to the school children and the local community in Ambur.

With the Farida factory located just about 10 meters from the school building, it was a perfect location to address the issue for both the workers and their families and children. Previously, the school purchased water supplied by local trucks but this water was basically undrinkable due to the bacterial contamination where both surface and underground water supply sources are polluted. Now, the community will have a continual supply of treated water from the tower which meets the standards of the World Health Organization, and uses no power or harmful chemicals for treatment. And Planet Water provides more than just installation – the community was provided with education and training on water health and hygiene; local community members were trained on how to conduct easy daily maintenance procedures; and the filtration system is backed by a lifetime guarantee.

Timberland is timberland proud to be associated with PWF and the Farida Group, and thankful that a sustainable solution for the Ambur community’s drinking water needs was found. The looks on the children’s faces says it all…

Ramit Pal Singh, Head of India Operations for Timberland was there to witness the community impact:

It was indeed a great moment to see the direct impact on the community. We all know how much the communities are affected by water borne diseases, especially the children in places like Ambur. The thing that moved me the most was the excitement and immense happiness with kids when they had the access to clean drinking water and realized that it’s here to stay. Being kids, they could not say it in enough words but you could see in their eyes and make out what they felt while they were botas timberland jumping and clapping which was so very satisfying. Work like this gives much more pleasure than just having a good day at office!

Community members and workers shared in Ramit’s delight:

“We are so grateful to you and your company that we do not have words to express our feeling. The sights of these children drinking clean and safe water bring immense happiness to us. Thank you so much.” ~ Mrs Jayanthi.G.N

“We … have never seen such a buyer who cares about us so much…….. we know your tree plantation work in Ambur streets and now this facility for cleanest and safest water is unbelievable. Thanks so much.” ~ Mr. Shabeen Taj.V

The school management expressed their gratitude as well…“We are fortunate that Timberland selected our school for this great work. We are dedicated to maintain this system as it is and God bless Timberland for all its great work.” But really, a thank you must go to the school that worked diligently to secure approvals from government authorities and for allowing the community members to have full access to the supply of water.

Mecca Irshad Ahmed, Managing Director of Farida Group of Companies was also present for the installation of the tower and had this to say: “Great work and thanks to Timberland for its effort. I am gamed to put Water Tower in each school of Ambur with support of Timberland. So let this be a beginning …”

I agree 100%, Irshad. Through our Code of Conduct assessments, we will continue to evaluate the need for clean drinking water in all the communities where our products are sourced globally. In addition to India, we have currently identified such need in Bangladesh and Vietnam. With support from valued business partners like the Farida Group, local schools in communities of need, and organizations like the Planet Water Foundation, solutions are becoming a reality. Together we are making a difference…Thank you!

London Style

Adele, a manager at Timberland’s International Design Center in London, shares the following story about a day of service with City Year London:
What an excellent day at the Peel Institute!

On Wednesday 9th February, City Year joined forces with volunteers from Timberland, Burberry and Wilton and Bain to transform the gardens of the Institute, a community centre which serves the diverse communities of Islington providing opportunities and facilities for education, recreation and the advancement of social, economic and mental wellbeing.

We were welcomed by young leaders, in their bright red, easily distinguished gear ( supplied by TBL), who have worked for botas timberland City Year from September 2010 so far. What an inspiration it is, to see young confident people leading and being fully engaged in community service!

City Year service days are a unique opportunity to transform a community site while working with other dedicated volunteers in an enjoyable atmosphere. The ARAMARK civic engagement team are young devoted and energetic corps members whose focus is on staging these events, organising and preparing all projects so volunteers can simply step in and make a difference.

City Year strives to make their service projects inspirational, transformational and sustainable. As such, they work closely with the local community to find what areas need physical change and how to use volunteer muscle to make that a reality.

As a result of recent government cuts, non-essential maintenance of the Peel Institute has had to be stopped, and as a result the gardens had become overgrown and uninviting to the community. During our day of service, we worked on improving the garden and outdoor space, and prepared an area to be used as a playground in the future. City Year hopes to continue working with Peel, engaging volunteers to utilise and maintain the general upkeep of the outside space.

Timberland volunteers all enjoyed the experience, and we look forward to working with City timberland portugal Year again!

Reasons Why We Love Earth Day

What’s to love about a day of community service in honor of Earth Day?

#1. POWER TOOLS

#2. PAINT

#3. WHEELBARROWS

We also love timberland portugal mulch, rakes, hammers and all sorts of other toys of the great outdoors we don’t get to play with during the course of a normal business day.

Timberland volunteers were not the only ones to get out and celebrate Earth Day this week – it looks like our West Coast colleagues at The North Face, lucy and JanSport had a great day doing good work, too:

Yes, it was a lot of fun – and incredibly meaningful for the local community and environmental organizations who benefited from our efforts. Thanks to the Timberland and VF volunteers who took time out this week to make a difference in their world; the sore muscles timberland and sunburned arms were well worth it.

This One’s For You

Slaves to fashion, take note: you no longer have to suffer the wrath of a pair of high heels that look fabulous but kill your feet. Just in time for fall shoe shopping, Timberland’s product team proudly shares our suspension heel technology (otherwise known as, ‘yes you really can run botas timberland around in these shoes timberland all day without cringing or crying’):

Remember, the early bird gets the best selection: beat the fall rush by checking out our new arrivals in women’s footwear.

Transformative Change

I believe that the current paradigm of problem solving in the civic square is inadequate; what results from the uncoordinated efforts of well intended “players” in the world around us stares us in the face and indicts us for our limited imaginations. As a small company with big dreams, we have known from the get go that only by collaborating—with NGOs, with activists, with critics, with governments, and even with competitors—only through an engaged stakeholder network will we leverage real and sustainable change. Building this paradigm, of awkward collaboration, is incredibly frustrating and potentially transformative.

Case in point: last summer, as part of our on-going, quarterly stakeholder engagement process, we hosted a stakeholder discussion (The Need for Product Comparability) regarding the role of environmental labeling on products in the outdoor industry. We hosted critics, activists, thought leaders, and practitioners. I co-hosted the call with a passionate outdoor retailer, a sustainable leader in retailing — MEC CEO David Labistour. In the process of engaging stakeholders, we confronted real, vexing questions — as for instance, whether our industry should put an environmental label on all products starting yesterday, or whether we should focus more of our industry efforts on perfecting standards and measures and methodologies. And underlying the discussion were months, literally months, of head-breaking conversations and negotiations within the Outdoor Industry Association, all aimed at developing and implementing an industry-wide label and metrics—the OIA Eco Index. For an entrepreneur, for a person of principle—all this process, all this negotiating with stakeholders, all this consensus building is back breaking and sapatilhas timberland worse—but as a small company with big dreams, we know that only through this paradigm of awkward botas timberland collaboration are we going to make sustainable change. The OIA will get its Eco Index built and implemented—in part because un-natural collaborators (arch competitors like Timberland and Nike and Patagonia, or customer/suppliers like Timberland and MEC) are doing the awkward work of real collaboration.

Establishing meaningful dialogue in order to change the old problem-solving paradigm can be awkward in its own right. Out of a passionate blog post I wrote grew a real conversation with a principled competitor — Jochen Zeitz, the Chief Sustainability Officer of PPR. Credit to Mr. Zeitz for reaching out and establishing a conversation, which discovered a shared urgency around the need for deliberate collaboration in an industry that can be fiercely insular. In the last 10 years, we have spent time with our competitors and with our suppliers and with our customers—awkward collaborations, most of those– to share information, dig deep, and see what we can learn from each other. In every instance I’ve come away learning something, better for the process.

And now, I’m set to do it again. Thank you, Mr. Zeitz, for taking the time to call – I look forward to meeting in Germany, and beginning in earnest the awkward dance of collaboration that drives sustainable change.

Free Music Friday!

Every month on Timberland’s community site, we feature a new musician or band that timberland portugal shares our passion for the environment and makes (in our humble opinion) great music. May’s musicians are Alex and Janel, a New York-based pop-folk / Americana duo who reuse, recycle and drive their shared car only under duress:

If you think they’re environmental commitment is impressive, wait til you hear Maria (All That Time), a track from their latest album. You can download it on our music page (free!) … and while you’re there, check timberland out our previous featured artists and their tunes as well.

Winter’s Weather Memorable

Some might call this winter’s weather memorable … others might consider it challenging. But imagine how difficult you might find cold, wet, snowy weather if you had no way to adequately protect yourself from it.
Timberland recently donated 200 pairs of boots to the Streetwork Project, a program committed to helping homeless youth in New York City. In addition to offering its clients hot meals, botas timberland emergency housing and clothing, the Streetwork Project also supports equally critical, longer-term needs with services like free legal and medical care, GED preparation and individual counseling.

Compared to all that Streetwork offers, a couple hundred pairs of boots didn’t feel like much … but in return for our donation, we received the following letter:

I wanted to let you know that in all this bad weather what a true gift the boots you donated have been. This couldn’t have been more timely as this has been one of the worst winters on record, and the homeless youth population we help is the largest we have experienced.

The boots really made a difference and especially came in handy on the day of the big snowstorm at the end of December. We were open that Monday and had over 40 youth who visited the drop-in to get some respite from the storm’s aftermath. Several young people arrived with their feet soaking wet because they did not have appropriate footwear for the weather. They were able to leave our program knowing that at the very least their feet would be dry and warm, thanks to Timberland. One young man in particular was wearing boots whose soles were completely worn out but was very shy about asking for help. One of our staff noticed the condition of his boots and offered him a pair of Timberland boots. The young man was very grateful for the boots and ecstatic that all of you at Timberland cared enough to do this for him.

Another young woman came in that day with some thin canvas sneakers completely soaked through. She is a young woman who was trafficked to the U.S. from another country and has not faced weather like this before. We were able to sapatilhas timberland provide her with a pair of Timberland boots and she too was very grateful and amazed that there are people who care and want to help.

Without these boots, the almost 200 youth you have helped would be exposed to the elements and facing serious health issues. This has helped spread the word that not only does Timberland care, but that you believe in our program. Thank you so very much from all of our staff at Streetwork and from the youth you have helped through this difficult winter.

We’re grateful to the staff at Streetwork for their dedication to helping homeless youth in New York … and honored to be able to support them and their clients.

Love Letter From Dave

I’ve been wearing Timberland boots since I left on my round timberland the world bicycle journey in September 2009, through all sorts of weather conditions – sun, wind, rain, snow – on concrete, mud, sand and gravel.

I’ve taken them to all 4 corners of Canada and each side of the United States and wore them non-stop when having to pedal away from large packs of Bison running after me while riding. I rely on these shoes to get me around as they are well made, the soles are thick and rigid, and importantly the laces and other hardware surrounding the lacing area puts up with considerable amount of abuse. It’s a must to have a waterproof membrane for what I do, and equally important that it can breathe on hot days as I will wear my Timberlands in 104 or -20F.

I’m choosing to wear Timberland boots all the way around the world, I know they work, fit great and can stand up to daily abuse.
Dave’s boots (rest assured we’ve sent him a new pair, just in case these do eventually bite the dust):

If the packs of bison or crazy extreme temperatures caught your attention, you can click through to Dave’s website to read more about his travels and experiences. And if you’ve had your own Timberland-equipped journey, please share! (It’s botas timberland okay if your journey was around the block and not around the world … every story counts.)
